About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our early-stage climate tech startup to build the infrastructure for corporates and investors to navigate, access, and support credible climate solutions, making a significant positive environmental and social impact. You’ll not only gain valuable knowledge about climate change and carbon offsetting but also contribute to the development of our company's future. We’re seeking a self-motivated, entrepreneurial full-stack engineer who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and enjoys taking ownership of projects.

As a Senior Engineer at Abatable, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing robust solutions that drive our mission to reduce carbon emissions. You’ll collaborate closely with the Product and Design teams and other stakeholders to execute projects using your technical and leadership skills. Your expertise and input will be essential in shaping our technical architecture, driving our mission forward, and making a tangible impact on the planet.

Abatable is a B2B-focused company operating in the rapidly growing voluntary carbon market. As a Senior Engineer, you will need to understand our customer's and partners' needs to develop solutions that meet their requirements. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects from start to finish, ensuring they are delivered on time and to a high standard.

What you’ll be using

What you’ll be doing

  • Take end-to-end ownership of developing software solutions to support the company's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Serve as the technical lead, providing direction, effective delegation, tradeoff management, and strategic decision-making to steer the team towards success.
  • Work closely with peers across different functions to define product requirements and ensure engineering initiatives are aligned with business goals.
  • Facilitate and drive technical discussions with the team, ensuring well-informed engineering decisions are made to factor in long-term tradeoffs and business needs.
  • Set a high bar for technical excellence by leading by example, recognising exceptional work by team members, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers on your team, empowering them to improve their skills and grow their careers.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to enhance the company's products and development practices.
  • Advocate for and contribute to the company's engineering culture, promoting knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Who we’re looking for

  • Backend expertise: You have extensive experience in tackling backend challenges and working with relational databases, and you are proficient in designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient and resilient solutions within a cloud environment.
  • Proven track record: You have a history of launching and maintaining software products with minimal guidance and developed a deep understanding of modern development practices and technologies.
  • Leadership experience: You have technically led teams to good outcomes, making critical decisions and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Product focus: You are passionate about building high-quality products that meet customer needs and deliver business value, and you’re comfortable being proactive with your ideas.
  • Strategic thinker: You consider the long-term impact of your decisions and the strategic goals of the business when making technical decisions
  • Mentorship skills: You have coached and mentored junior engineers, helping them grow in their roles and develop their skills.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit: You’re excited to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment and thrive on taking ownership of projects from start to finish.
  • Open-minded and inclusive: You can work effectively with diverse colleagues and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Continuous learner: You’re committed to staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices and are eager to apply new learnings to your work.
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK, as we are unable to sponsor a visa at this time.
