Background

The shipping industry accounts for ~3% of global CO2 emissions. If it were a country, it would rank above Germany (the 6th largest emitter in the world).

Currently, there’s no solution for ships to go 100% clean. Alternative power sources like hydrogen, ammonia, and onboard batteries are still 10-20 years away from maturity for large ships.

About Seabound

Seabound captures CO2 emissions from ships.

We are building a retrofittable device that traps the CO2 from a ship’s exhaust gas. It has the potential to be one of the simplest, safest, and most affordable solutions for zero-emissions shipping.

In 2022, we proved the concept on land and secured 6 LOIs (Letters of Intent) from major shipowners to purchase our systems from 2024 onwards. In the next 6-12 months, we will develop and demonstrate our first capture unit at sea. We are now recruiting a Senior Outfitting and Project Engineer to join our founding team to help realize and demonstrate this new category of maritime climate tech.

Roles and responsibilities

You will have significant influence over all stages of the development process of a novel ship-based carbon capture system, from prototyping, pilot projects, to commercial scale-up.

What You’ll Do:

  • Serve as the overall project owner for Seabound’s onboard carbon capture pilot project in 2023 as well as future commercial projects – this means you will set up and maintain a project management system, break down work packages and coordinate among a small and agile engineering team
  • Own integration of the carbon capture system with onboard machinery – design and analyze pipe routing and bracketry, create P&IDs, and calculate basic equipment sizing
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients, shipyards, subcontractors, and suppliers; secure approval from class societies
  • Create a bill of materials and drawing packages for retrofit projects; create fabrication drawings as necessary using 2D or 3D CAD
  • Review and approve production installation drawings, manufacturing drawings, and bills of material; check for accuracy against basic/detail design, yard and project standards, 3D model, previous vessels, and any known design changes; identify any missing equipment or parts, interferences, production or regulation issues; interface with other engineers for revision.
  • Oversee and coordinate pilot equipment installation
  • Participate in the development and oversight of testing and commissioning procedures
  • Troubleshoot problems during installation onboard and/or sea trial
  • Support the final project close out of all documentation updates and development of user manuals relating to outfitting systems
  • Collaborate with other engineers on the team, help grow and build a strong engineering culture and team
  • Anything else that needs to be done in an early-stage startup

Skills and requirements

We are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline plus 6+ years work experience or 8+ years relevant experience, with an emphasis on Outfitting
  • Experience in project management and designing overall system onboard
  • Experience in vendor/supplier relationships, e.g. dealing with long lead-time or difficult-to-source items, factory acceptance tests, sea trial tests
  • Good knowledge and experience in marine engine and exhaust systems
  • Someone who is resourceful, ambitious, excited to tackle hard problems that no one has solved before, and holds themselves and others to a high standard
  • Someone who is passionate about decarbonizing the shipping industry and tackling the climate crisis
  • Ability to operate effectively with high degrees of uncertainty and to execute tasks against tight timelines and aggressive schedules

Bonus:

  • Experience leading or executing retrofit conversion projects such as sulfur scrubbers, other exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), or ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) is a strong bonus
  • Experience leading the development of a new hardware product/technology in the marine industry
  • Experience working with classification societies for new technology approval e.g. Approval in Principle and Type Approval
  • Strong hands-on capability with CAD and finite element analysis (FEA) software packages e.g. ANSYS or Abaqus
  • Experience owning significant responsibility in a fast-paced working environment
  • Willingness to relocate to the UK

We are hiring remotely but you might need to travel internationally for a few weeks at a time, since we have partners and workshops at various locations.

The compensation range provided is only indicative and commensurates with the level of experience, location, as well as candidate’s preference for salary versus equity.

Seabound is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and strive to create an environment that is inclusive to all employees.
