It’s not apparently easy to land a job as a toilet manager in one of the districts in Wuhan, the capital of central China’s Hubei province.
According to a job ad posted online by the officials Hongshan District, in order to be considered for the position, the applicant must not be older than 30 years old and, to much everyone’s surprise, must have at least a bachelor’s degree.
Many netizens ridiculed the requirements that the district posted online, CQCB reported, as translated by Shanghaiist via Medium. One of comments said: “If you don’t study hard, you won’t even be qualified enough to run a public toilet.”
Another netizen argued that if the manager has a bachelor’s degree, then therefore its supervisor must hold a master’s degree.
However, an official of the city’s Hongshan District Urban Management Committee quickly jumped to explain the confusion behind its job ad requirement. The official emphasized that the person would fill the position will be in charge of handling administrative duties for the district’s public bathrooms.
Its job ad clearly shows how much importance the district puts into its public restrooms, which are now undergoing a countrywide overhaul where thousands of toilets are set to be modernized in a “toilet revolution.”
This initiative will improve and renovate the country’s public bathrooms that are outdated, mainly those that are still using squat toilets in the country’s crowded cities and even in rural areas.
