Best Hari Raya Ads of 2017 | BEAMSTART News

The best holiday of the year is almost over! While some of the best moments during Raya would be the great times with family & friends, great food and the fun, one undisputable highlight of this holidays would definitely by the ads by our local brands to amp up the Raya-mood. So before we officially close our Hari Raya celebrations, let’s have a look back and relive what I thought was among the best best Raya ads of 2017.

Gitar Buruk by MyEG

The core value highlighted in this video is forgiveness between two brothers. The advertisement begins with younger brother, Rahman, who uses the laptop while his elder brother, Razif, sleeps beside him. Rahman has a guitar that he adores dearly. Their mother then calls Rahman to remind Razif to pay for his road tax, summons, and zakat. When Rahman wakes his brother to relay the message, the latter groggily mentions that he will pay them soon.

The scene shifts to the brothers driving back to their “kampung” excitedly to celebrate Hari Raya with their family. When Rahman informed Razif that there is a roadblock ahead, the elder brother starts panicking as he has not paid his road tax. Then, to worsen the situation, the car’s engine started overheating and so they had to stop by the roadside. While Razif was thinking on how to solve the issue, Rahman added salt to the wounds by taking out his beloved guitar and agitated Razif with a parody of a Hari Raya song. This caused Razif to lose his temper and eventually break Rahman’s guitar.

Eventually, the car managed to be fixed and the brothers managed to reach their hometown. However, the brothers were no longer in talking terms (for obvious reasons). That night, Rahman got hold of a video recording of his birthday which saw Razif giving him the guitar as his present.

The next day, Razif surprised his brother with a self-made punk rock inspired guitar as his way to apologise for breaking Rahman’s guitar. However, Rahman was not amused with the new guitar which prompted Razif to suggest buying a new guitar for his brother instead. Rahman, realising that he was partially at fault, apologised for his behaviour when the car broke down. Razif accepted the apology and both brothers buried the hatchet. The ending note reminds viewers to settle their issues with one another. You can watch the ad campaign, entitled Guitar Buruk here.

Lagi-Lagi Bahulu Emak by MYNIC

A heart-wrenching sequel to the ad campaign released by the same organisation last year which you can view here, this ad is a continuation of Adam’s and his mum’s story. In this ad, Adam’s kuih bahulu humble store has flourished into a successful online business. Adam’s mother is still in staying in her “kampung” home, while Adam is living in the city. The scene starts with Adam’s mother cooking up a big feast, before calling him to “buka puasa” with her, but Adam apologetically told her that he will be having a “buka puasa” buffet with his wife, child, and in-laws in a hotel.

In the next scene, it is revealed that recent sales have dropped due to the inconsistency of the kuih bahulu produced by the company as they are no longer made by the mother herself. While discussing about the faltering sales figures with his business partner, his partner mentioned that Adam has not been back for Hari Raya ever since he got married, which made him flustered.

At first, Adam decided to travel back to his hometown, but he changed his mind at the very last minute to console his sulking wife by going to his in-laws’ place instead. On the day of Hari Raya, it was revealed that the Adam’s mother had purposely travelled long hours to visit them up north all by herself. This tear-jerking video is a must-watch as it serves as a reminder to never forget our parents no matter how successful or busy we are.

En. Adli and Luqman by Astro Gempak

This ad campaign by Astro is based on a true story of En. Adli, founder of the Autism Café Project which helps young adults with autism to be self-sufficient through vocational training.

In the video, En. Adli has a special needs son, Luqman. He vowed to love him wholeheartedly and to be the best father that he can be. However, as years passed, he could not give as much attention as his autistic child’s needs because he was busy making a living. Luqman’s condition also causes him to be increasingly frustrated and concerned.

One day, he saw that Luqman was looking attentively at a man washing plates. This caused him to take leap of faith and resign his job and sell his car to focus fully on taking care of Luqman. He then started the Autism Café Project which was when he saw Luqman washing plates happily with a big smile of his face. In his effort to seek forgiveness from Luqman, Mr. Adli eventually realised that all he had to do was to forgive himself. Watch the video here.

Hikayat Guardian-Pura by Guardian Malaysia

Endling the list on a happier note, Guardian Malaysia decided to create its own parody of the popular Malay folklore, Bawang Putih Bawang Merah for its Hari Raya video campaign this year. Unlike the other videos mentioned above, this ad is humorous yet it delivers the important message of not judging one by how they look, but how they are as a person.

The story starts with the Prince of “Guardian-pura” who went hunting for a deer for the upcoming Raya celebrations. However, he and the warriors failed to capture a deer and to makes things worse, the Prince fell into a rapidly-flowing river. As he was struggling for his life, he heard a melodious voice that motivated him to stay alive. Then the owner of the voice also managed to save the Prince from the rapids.

Once the Prince has awoken, he and his Prince went on a search to look for the owner of the sweet voice that saved his life. He came across a family and managed to find his saviour, Bawang Merah. After a visit to Guardian, Bawang Merah’s complexion improved and now she is beautiful both on the outside and the inside. The Prince and Bawang Merah eventually got married. Being the loving person that she is, Bawang Merah forgave her step-mother and her step-sister, Bawang Putih for their past mistakes.

In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, let us forgive and seek reconciliation with one another. Wishing all Muslims in Malaysia a “Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin” and may you have a great time with your loved ones this holiday season!
